I was sitting on a park bench in Martha’s Vineyard last summer trying to take the perfect photo of my feet over the water that it dawned on me that I was doing it wrong. I wasn’t taking the photo incorrectly. I wasn’t showing my photos correctly.
I know how to take a decent photo. I’m an amateur photographer but I know some of the rules and had recently started to up my Instagram game so I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t getting many Likes. Then I realized I was a complete idiot and switched my profile from private to public (duh!). When you only allow a few people to follow you, newsflash, you’re only going to a few Likes on photos. So that was a no-brainer and I kicked myself for not remembering sooner that I had switched my profile to private years earlier. At the time, I wanted to keep my selfies, fun pics with my friends and random travel photos within my inner circle. But now I was traveling more and taking cool travel photos and wanted to truly share them with the world.
When you’re on Martha’s Vineyard and you want people to be jealous, you post on Instagram.
I started to up my Instagram game and followed a bunch of travel bloggers and influencers. My Followers and Likes increased but they were only inching up. Soon Instagram Stories became more of a thing and I started watching these same bloggers and influencers and I somehow stumbled onto @HeleneInBetween.
Helene has good hair so for some reason that made me want to watch her haha. I realize how superficial that sounds but when you have lame, thin, straight hair that never curls, sometimes you have hair envy okay! I may have first been entranced by Helene’s long, curly locks but soon I was interested in what she had to say. She seemed to be leading a cool travel girl’s life and I wanted to know more. She told me about her dogs, her new life living in Germany and soon she was telling me how to improve my Instagram feed.
